Intent

  • To instil a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures. We want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French.

Implementation

  • There are 6 strands of learning: speaking and pronunciation, listening, reading and writing, grammar, intercultural understanding and language detective skills.
  • Lessons are taught weekly in KS2 and the skills and knowledge progress through the year groups.
  • Key skills and vocabulary increase in complexity whilst being revised and repeated to embed learning.
  • The focus in Year 3 is oral communication and from Year 4 there is a balance of oral and written French.

Impact

The impact of the teaching is measured by considering the following questions:

Can the children:

  • Speak French aloud with confidence?
  • Engage in purposeful dialogue in French and express an opinion?
  • Make accurate attempts to read words and phrases in French?
  • Demonstrate understanding by responding appropriately?
  • Use a bilingual dictionary?
  • Identify grammatical rules they have learnt?
  • Demonstrate an awareness of cognates and near=cognates to be able to tackle unfamiliar words in French and English?
  • Construct short texts on familiar topics?
