Welcome to Forest School at Longwick

Forest School is offered to all children at Longwick School and lasts usually for half a term to enable continuity.  It promotes the holistic development of children by encouraging child-initiated play, risk taking and learning in a natural environment.  Through observation and positive encouragement, the Forest School Leader provides activities and resources so children can use their preferred style of learning and move their learning forward.  This promotes self-confidence, giving children a greater sense of self-esteem and building their resilience.

FOREST SCHOOL AIMS:

  • to support the social and emotional well-being of all children through child-initiated play using the natural environment.
  • to build self-confidence and self-esteem in all children, developing emotional intelligence.
  • To give children the skills and tools to develop a love of learning in all areas of life.

Activities used during Forest School to promote physical, intellectual, language, emotional and spiritual growth, which in turn will help to raise a child's confidence, self-esteem and help build resilience:

  • Nature and wildlife discovery, observation and appreciation.
  • Learning how to respect the outside environment around us.
  • Problem solving activities.
  • Physical challenges.
  • Team building activities.
  • Child-initiated play.
  • Nature art and craft work.
  • Music making.
  • Storytelling.
  • Using imagination.

The following activities will be closely supervised by the Forest School Leader:

  • Campfire building and lighting.
  • Cooking on a campfire.
  • Working with Forest School tools.
