Music
Intent:
The music curriculum at Longwick intends to inspire 'Longwick Learners' and enable them to become musicians who can share and perform using their skills. Our philosophy of music education is based on the principle that it should be fun and engaging for all concerned and that every child is a born musician. Music plays a role in every aspect of our lives, wherever and whoever we are.
This curriculum is informed by the Model Music Curriculum (March 2021). All music lessons are designed to support SEND children and are fully inclusive. Adaptations can be made to ensure all children can access and enjoy lessons.
For both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, music lessons should be taught for 30 minutes per week (class music lessons from BMT are 45 minutes).
In Key Stage 2, children at Longwick can learn an instrument for a half term. These lessons are given by a music specialist from the Buckinghamshire Music Trust, who teaches the skill of playing and reading music. These instruments include drums, ukuleles and recorders.
Additionally, lessons taught by class teachers following Charanga encourage children to sing individually and as an ensemble. Pupils have ample opportunities to develop their aural proficiency (singing voice), express themselves physically to music, and contribute to musical compositions using a wide range of tuned and un-tuned instruments. Pupils explore the interrelated dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, structure and age-appropriate musical notation.
