Physical Education at Longwick
The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils develop the competence and confidence to excel in a wide range of physical activities. It encourages physical activity for sustained periods, engagement in both cooperative and competitive sports, and the promotion of healthy, active lifestyles.
At Longwick, our PE curriculum is designed to foster the knowledge, skills, and capabilities necessary for the mental, emotional, social, and physical well-being of our pupils—both now and in the future. Physical fitness plays a key role in leading a healthy lifestyle and teaches valuable life lessons such as self-discipline, resilience, and the determination to work hard and achieve success.
Our intent at Longwick is to inspire a lifelong passion for sport by laying strong foundations upon which children can continue to build throughout their lives. We are committed to delivering high-quality teaching and learning experiences that motivate every child to succeed in physical activities. We aim to help children develop essential teamwork skills, learning how to cooperate, collaborate, and embrace fairness and empathy, all while reflecting our Christian values.
As part of our commitment to developing competitive spirit and resilience, we encourage pupils to apply themselves in competitive sports. Every year, children thoroughly enjoy taking part in local football and netball tournaments, where they can showcase their skills, work as part of a team, and challenge themselves against other schools. Our annual Sports Day, held in the Summer Term, is another opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their commitment and enthusiasm for physical activity, and it’s always a fun and exciting event for the whole school community.
In addition to our core curriculum, we offer a wide range of extracurricular sporting activities throughout the year, including football, netball, cross-country, athletics, and multi-sports. We also invite local clubs to share their expertise, participate in workshops, and raise the profile of PE and Games within our school. We are proud to celebrate the successes of our pupils, both in school and in external competitions, reinforcing the joy and value of sport in our community.
